Plainly Prepared turns official emergency guidance into plain steps a household can follow. We start with the family emergency plan, then help you build the kit that fits it: water, radios, power, car kits and the supplies each hazard needs.

Where the guidance comes from

Safety advice on this site follows official sources: Ready.gov, the National Weather Service, NOAA, the CDC and FEMA. Where sources disagree or a claim is not settled, we say so or leave it out. Our sources and methodology page lists how each guide is checked.

How we choose products

Our picks come from each product’s listed features, checked against what a household actually needs in an outage or evacuation. We do not test products by hand, and we never invent prices, ratings or test results. Product details can change, so check the current listing before you buy.
